SHANNON, Herbert Strachan (1880-1955)


Herbert Shannon, a grazier of Ingleneuk, Upper Murray was for many years a Company Director of the Geelong based business, Godfrey Hirst and Company.

Herbert was the fourth of eight children born to Charles Shannon (c1841-1922) and Emily Agnes Stachan (1847-1907, the daughter of James Ford Strachan (1810-1875) and Lilias Cross Murray (1816-1896). He had been born in Geelong on 22 March, 1880. He was enrolled at Geelong College as a day student on 25 July, 1893.

In 1912, at Albury, he married Alma Blanche Mary nee Chenery (1888-1974). Herbert Shannon died on 1955 and was buried at the Albury Pioneer Cemetery (Sect 9 C of E Row K Lot 36). Alma Shannon died on 13 july, 1974 and was also buried at the Pioneer Cemetery on 16 July although in the same plot (Sect 9 CofE Row K Lot 36) as her daughter, Margaret

their daughter, Margaret Alma Strachan Shannon (c1913-1928), was enrolled at the Presbyterian Girls College, Geelong (Morongo) on 13 February 1924 but after leaving Morongo on 14 December 1927 did not return. She died early on 5 February 1928. The Margaret Shannon Memorial Cup was named in her memory.

Herbert's son, Charles Strachan Shannon (1914-1992), also attended Geelong College.
