SHEPHERD, Clifford Irving (1896-1933)


Clifford Irving Shepherd was born on 29 July 1896, the son of Francis James Shepherd and Mary nee Irving.

Clifford was enrolled at Geelong College in 1907, leaving in December 1908, then re-entering in February 1910, and, finally leaving in December 1911. His entry address was Virginia St, Newtown.

During World War I, he enlisted (No. 33160) in the AIF on 1 November 1916. He was in Maribyrnong Camp in January 1917, then embarked with the February 25th Artillery Reinforcements on HMAT A9 Shropshire on 11 May 1917 for England to serve with 2nd Field Artillery Brigade. He proceeded to France on 14 November 1917 and transferred to 1st Convalescent Depot at Roullens. He had leave to Paris late in September 1918, and embarked for England on 23 November.

He returned to Australia on HMT Morvada, embarking on 4 January 1919.

Clfford died in 1933. The Age newspaper published a brief tribute: 'There was a representative gathering, representing the State Electricity Commission and sporting and military organisations of the district, at the Eastern cemetery yesterday afternoon for the burial of Mr. Clifford Irving Shepherd. Mr. Shepherd, who died on Tuesday afternoon, was for a number of years in the employ of the Melbourne Electric Supply Co. and the State Electricity Commission.'
