In the years prior to World War I shooting was one of the major School activities participated in by the School Cadets. The College appears to have had a natural advantage possibly derived from the large numbers of country boarders whose home life involved rabbit shooting and similar. So profound was this advantage that up until about 1906 the School occupied a dominant position among schools in shooting. In the peak year, 1905, the School won both the Senior and Junior Sargood Shields, the Field Firing Competition, the Cumming Cup and also occupied the first four places in the Senior Individual Shooting. It was the fifth successive year in which the School had won the Senior Sargood Shield and the first time any School had won both the Junior and Senior Shields.
Shooting continues to be a supported sport at the College and in 2014 a shooting team participated in several interschool events.
In 1905, the Senior Sargood Shield was set over 200 yards and 500 yards using Martini-Enfield Rifles. The Junior Sargood Shield was for teams of five cadets under 15 years of age from 100 yards and 200 yards using 5 rounds. The Field Firing Competition was a team based event using disappearing targets at unknown distances. The Cumming Cup was for eight cadet teams firing over 200 and 500 yards. The individual Competition was based on seven shots at 200 and 500 yards.
