SIMPSON, Dr John George (1916-1997)
Dr John George Simpson, medical practitioner, was the son of James George Simpson and Catherine Mildred nee Greenwood. He attended Scotch College from 1930 to 1932 before entering Geelong College from 1933 to 1935.
He was a member of the 1st Rowing VIII in 1935, a School prefect in 1934 and 1935, Warrinn House Captain and a Cadet Corps lieutenant. He studied medicine at Melbourne University graduating MB BS in 1941 before becoming Resident Medical Officer at Launceston General Hospital.
He had joined the Melbourne University Rifles in December, 1940 but eventually enlisted in the AIF. He was commissioned as Captain with 2/5th Australian Commando Squadron (Medical Section) and in the closing stages of the war was in Borneo. He was discharged in July 1946. After the war John entered general practice in Balwyn. He was a foundation Member of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and in 1956, was an Honorary Medical Officer to the XVI Olympiad, Melbourne.
For many years he was Honorary Medical Officer to Johnis Homes for Boys and Girls, being awarded Life Governorship in 1958, and Member of the Committee of the Medical Benevolent Association. The gates near the College Chapel on the north-east corner of the Senior School campus were originally presented to the School by Mr Simpson's family during his time at the College. They were originally located at the Preparatory School.
