William Howard Sloane
(Prefect, 1921)
William Howard Sloane, romantic poet and beekeeper was born at Corowa to parents William Sloane and Jane Gordon and was one of three brothers, Andrew Gordon Sloane (1899-1964) and Ian Fyfe Sloane (1903-1986) to be educated at Geelong College. Howard had previously attended Brighton Grammar School before attending Geelong College, initially as a day student from 1916 to June 1919 and then as a boarder until 1921. He was a School Prefect in 1921 and a voluntary Librarian.
Howard is notable for his publication of 'Beehive Management in Australia' in 1975, based on a selection of articles published in
'The Australasian Beekeeper' . In
'Beehive Management' , he describes his introduction to beekeeping while a student at Geelong College in 1919 when he and a group of other boys visited the You Yangs on a bicycle tour from the School. He also published a book of poetry entitled “Australian Reverie”. His interest in both writing and the natural world were visible at College with several articles published in
Pegasus while he was a student.
