SMALL, Lindesay John Lyons (1893-1955)


Lindesay John Lyons Small was born on 14 July 1893, the son of Lindesay Alexander Robert Small and Lillian Marguerite nee Lyons.

He was enrolled as a day student at Geelong College in 1902. His address at entry was Aberdeen Street West, Geelong. He was amember of the Athletics Team in 1908. His enlistment records note that he served as 2nd Lieutenant for two years in the Senior Cadets.

In 1916, he married Miss Leslie Broughton Walker, daughter of Charles Bellin and Nellie Walker, before he enlisted during World War I (No 2927) in the AIF on 15 April 1916. He embarked for Egypt from Sydney on HMAT A58 Kabinga, where he served with his father. as The Geelong Advertiser reported:
'Mrs Lindsay Small, of Newtown, received a cable from her husband, Pte Lindesay Alexander Small; he is in England, and staying at Westward Ho, Devon, with his mother, whom he had not seen for thirty years. Pte L A R Small and his son, Pte L J L Small have gone on a Divisional Train (Anzac Mounted Division) in Egypt. The officer-in-command is Lt Howsam, a former Geelong Collegian.'

He returned to Australia on HMT Oxfordshire, embarking on 10 July 1919.

His brother, Alexander Ronald Small (1899-1980) was also educated at Geelong College.
