SMITH, Eric Grant (1894-1953)

Eric Grant Smith was one of three brothers (all Grant Smiths) who were educated at Geelong College, sons of Reverend John Millar Smith and Eliza Jane Ramsay, nee Grant. Eric Grant Smith was born on 24 September 1894 at Drouin and attended Geelong College from 1906 onwards.

During World War I, he enlisted (No. 10572) on 21 October 1915 as a gunner with the 13th Reinforcements to the 1st Divisional Ammunition Colunm. At the time of his embarkation his father's address was The Manse, Dimboola. His Australian War Memorial (AWM) embarkation roll entry states his occupation as 'dental mechanic'. On 15 May 1916 he was attached to XIA Trench Mortar Battery. He returned to Australia on 22 May 1919.

His name is not listed on the Geelong College World War I Memorial Tablet.

His brothers, John Grant Smith MC (1888-1921) and Leslie Robert Grant Smith (1895-1969) were also educated at Geelong College.
