Lindsay Smith was educated as a boarder at Geelong College from 1903 until 1909. After leaving School, he engaged in pastoral pursuits with his brother Stanley until his enlistment in the AIF on 31 July 1915.

He left Melbourne with 23 Battalion (7th Reinforcement Group), on 26 November 1915 on HMAT A73 Commonwealth. In Egypt he transferred as a bombardier (No. 3235) to 113 Howitzer Battery, 13th Field Artillery Brigade, and went straight to the front in France in July 1916. The Geelong Advertiser reported his death in May 1917:
'Mr Alex Smith, of Wagga (New South Wales), has been notified that his son, Bombardier Lindsay S Smith, has been killed in action in France. Educated at the Geelong College, Bombr. Smith was a young man having exceedingly bright prospects. He was 24 ears of age, and since his school days had been engaged with his brothers on Kyeamba Station, in which, with their father, they were interested. Since July 16, 1916 he has been constantly engaged in the trenches in France.'

His brother, Stanley Gordon Smith (1890-1957) was also educated at Geelong College.
