SNOWSPORTS (Sport)

Snowsports Teams from the Geelong College have competed in the annual Victorian Interschool Skiing Championships at Mt Buller since 1988. The girls’ team that first year consisted of Samala Singer, Megan Jackman, Susan Andrews, and Tabsie Lowdon and the boys’ team of Nathan Lyons, John Denahy, Adam Palmer-Morgan and Simon Bell. The College Girls’ Team came third out of 42 schools and the boys’ team won the competition against 59 other School Teams.

In 1996, the College entered its first snowboard team. In the mid-1990s, Nathan Lyon, Carlos Lowden, Fletcher Green, Holly Green, Roxy Green, Doji Singer, David Clarke and Tim Clarke were among the notable skiers.

In 2002, the event was held over 5 days at Mt Buller with 5000 entries from 3000 students. The College team included 75 members. There were 28 co-educational schools represented.

In 2000, Roxy Green blitzed the field gaining 1st place in both the Moguls and the Alpine events. Roxy also competed in the Australian National Junior championships in 2000, which included skiers from Europe, North America and Australia. Roxy placed 3rd in the Giant Slalom, but was the highest ranking Australian, making her Australia's fastest Under 16 Slalom Skier. In 2001 Roxy came 3rd and qualified for the National competition. In 2002 she gained a 2nd place in the Division 1 Girls’ Grand Slalom and a creditable performance in the moguls.

By 2011, the Snowsports Team had shrunk to 10 members, 5 from Prep School and 5 from Senior School. In 2011, Mollie Fernadez won the BCRA boarder cross event in Canada and placed first in the Mt Buller 'King of the Mountain' event in her age group earning an apparel sponsorship deal with clothing company, Ripcurl.
