STRAHAN, Anthony George Reginald 'Tony', OAM 'Tony' Strahan, OAM.
Champion swimmer, ‘Tony’ Strahan is the son of Henry and Diana Strahan, former students of Scotch College and The Hermitage, respectively. Before coming to The Geelong College, Tony attended nearby Newtown State School.
Tony was a day student from 1955 to 1960 and excelled at swimming while at the College. He was both Captain of swimming and the Open Swimming Champion in 1959 and 1960 as well as being a School Prefect, Vice-Captain of Morrison House, and in the athletics team from 1958 to 1960. He was also a corporal in the Cadet Corps of that time.
After leaving school, he studied accountancy and qualified as a Chartered Accountant.
He is a three-time Australian swimming team representative, and in 1962 was a gold medallist and world record holder in the 4 x 220 yds freestyle relay at the Commonwealth Games in Perth. On 23 June 2000 he was the recipient of the Australian Sports Medal for Australian sporting achievement.
He has been a stalwart of surf lifesaving and has won 14 individual Australian Masters surf lifesaving titles, a World Masters title at the 2006 World Championships, as well as the Lorne Pier to Pub swim 15 times.
Tony is a dedicated volunteer, having held many roles at the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club, Lifesaving Victoria and Swimming Victoria and for many years was the Victorian Superintendent of Junior lifesavers (Nippers).
In the Queen's Birthday Honours of 10 June 2019, 'Tony' Strahan was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia 'for service to Surf Lifesaving'.
