STRONG, Horace Newton (1872- )
Horace Strong was born on 23 October 1872, the son of William Strong and Martha, nee Hind.
He commenced at Geelong College as a day student on 18 April 1887. At the time his address was Pakington St, Chilwell.
'He later settled in Kawazulu, Natal about 1905, acting as transport conductor in General Botha's campaign. He was in charge of the convoys from Kuruman to Windhuk (sic), and was highly commended for the rapidity with which his train was brought up, and the excellence of the route he selected. This record indicates that he probably served with the South African Army during World War One, as this action took place in about July 1915 when the South African Army led by Louis Botha defeated the Germans in West Africa (Botha first had to deal with a Boer rebellion which verged on civil war) and occupied Windhoek (sic)'.
His brother, Leslie Norman Strong (1892-1937), was also educated at Geelong College.
