SUTTERBY, Herbert Reginald (1899-1955)

Reginald Sutterby was born on 25 April 1899, a son of Thomas Herbert Sutterby and Katherine nee Jellett.

After attending Swanston Street State School, he became a day student at Geelong College on 9 February 1914 and left in August 1914. His address at the time was Yarra St, South Geelong and he was enrolled as Reginald.

He was working as a wool classer at the time of his enlistment (No. 2739) in the AIF (6th Reinforcement Group) during World War I on 2 August 1916. He embarked for England on HMAT A71 Nestor on 2 October 1916, where he was based at Salisbury Plain in January 1917. He served with 57 Battalion. He was engaged as an Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC) Orderly after he was wounded in action in France at the Battle of the Hindenburg Line in September 1918. Just prior to his wounding he had applied for a transfer to the Flying Corps. He returned to Australia, embarking on 21 December 1918.

He served in the Second World War as Captain H R Sutterby, AASC (Central Australia Sub-Area), and was discharged on 30 December 1943.

His cousin, L/Cpl Thomas Norman Willis (1896-1917), 57 Battalion and an Old Geelong Collegian, was killed in action at Glencorse Wood on 26 September 1917. He has no known grave, and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Mellin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. Reginald Sutterby, who at that time was an AAMC Orderly at 1st Australian General Hospital, wrote to the Red Cross Information Bureau, on 15 January 1918, telling of Willis's death.

Pegasus reported his death in December 1955:
'H Reg Sutterby died suddenly at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital on September 17. He attended the College in 1914. His son, Tom was here a few weeks ago.'

His brothers, Thomas Eli Sutterby (1892-1948), and Harold Sutterby (1907-1967), were also educated at Geelong College.
