TROUP, William Macgregor, OBE (1908-1982)
‘Mac’ Troup, sheep farmer, was awarded OBE 'For State services in local government and to the community '. Ad Astra also noted his award: 'for long and distinguished service to Victoria in local government and community activities in the New Year Honours 1973.'
Born on 7 June 1908 at Clunes, Victoria to James Alexander Troup (1878-1929) and Mary Elizabeth, nee Matthews (1887-1957), he was enrolled as a boarder at Geelong College from 14 February 1923 to December 1928. He had previously attended Tourello State School and his address at enrolment was Tourello Lodge, Tourello.
At College he was a member of the 1sr Rowing Crews of 1926 and 1927.
He was elected as a member of Shire of Ballarat council in 1953 serving until 1970. He was Shire President in 1960-61. Among his achievements as a Shire Councillor was the establishment of Ballarat Airport and a monument honours his work at Learmonth Rd, Ballarat.
'Mac' died on 14 March 1982.
His brother, George Cattanach Troup (1919-1949), was also educated at Geelong College.
