WALLACE, Robert Thomas Armstrong (1889-1973)


Robert Thomas Armstrong Wallace was born at Piggoreet on 6 July 1889, the son of Robert Wallace and Annie Susan nee Armstrong.

He was enrolled as a boarder at Geelong College by Mrs Wallace in 1904. She cited their address as Presbyterian Ladies' College, Sydney, NSW. He became a member of the 1st Rowing VIII in 1905 and 1906 and the 1st Football XVIII in 1906.

During World War I, he enlisted (No. 666) in the AIF on 5 February 1915 at Wonthaggi, to serve in 23 Battalion, embarking for Egypt on HMAT A14 Euripides on 10 May 1915 and then for Gallipoli. He subsequently served in France. He was promoted Corporal on 16 December 1916 and Sergeant on 19 May 1917. He took leave in Paris late in ovember 1918. He returned to Australia on HMT Devanha, embarking on 8 May 1919.

He died on 4 June 1973.

His brother, Norman James Wallace (1886-1951), was also educated at Geelong College.
