WEBBER, Edmund Charles Somerset (1894-1966)


Edmund Charles Webber was born on 12 March 1894, the son of Samuel John Webber and Margaret nee McColl.

He was enrolled as aday student at Geelong College in 1902 leaving in 1911. His address at the time of enrolment was Bond Street, Chilwell. At College, he was a member of the Athletics Team in 1909 and the 1st Cricket XI in 1909, 1910 and 1911. He was a member of the 1st Football XVIII in 1910 and 1911 and Football Team Captain in 1911. He continued his football career after leaving College playing 6 games for the Geelong Football Club in the period 1912-1913.

During World War I, he enlisted (No. 663) in the AIF on 31 December 1915 and embarked with the 5th Reinforcement Group from Sydney on HMAT A71 Nestor on 9 April 1916 for England. From there he proceeded on SS Princess Henrietta to France where he served with the Siege Battery (36th Heavy Artillery Brigade) until his return to Australia on HMT Morvada, embarking on 4 January 1919.

His brother, Lionel Norman Webber (1892-1956), was also educated at Geelong College.
