WIDDICOMBE, AngusRower Angus Widdicombe has represented Australia on the world stage and Victoria in national competitions. Since rowing in high school, Angus’ passion and ability in the sport has seen him rise at a young age.
Angus became an Olympian for the 2020 Tokyo games. In the men’s eight stroke seat Angus set the rhythm for the crew to reach the finals, having placed fourth in their heat and then fourth again in the repechage. In the sixth lane, the Australians rowed strongly to place sixth in the final medal race.
Angus has had a successful international rowing career, representing Australia since 2016. In the U23 World Rowing Championships he and the eight crew came seventh. In the following year, Angus competed in a number of events, placing fourth in the World Rowing Cup II eight and in a coxless four at the World Rowing Cup III. A medal came when he and James Rock placed second in a coxed pair at the World Rowing Championships.
In 2018, Angus rowed in the stroke seat in the eight win a silver medal at the World Rowing Cup III. Silver came again in the same race at the World Rowing Championships. Then in the pair with Campbell Watts, they came second against Croatia at the Henley Royal Regatta Silver Goblets & Nickalls' Challenge Cup.
In another international rowing competition season, Angus rowed in the stroke seat for the eight in 2019. They came fifth at the World Rowing Cup II and sixth at the World Rowing Cup III. To qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, Angus and the crew placed fourth at the World Rowing Championships.
Prior to representing Australia, Angus had reached the state level, representing Victoria. In 2014, the Victorian youth eight won the Noel Wilkinson Trophy at the Australian Rowing Championships. In 2015, with Angus onboard, the Victorian senior eight won the King’s Cup. Angus has continued to row with Victoria for the King’s Cup, placing second in 2017, 2018, 2019. They won in 2021.
After spending some at his first senior club, Barwon Rowing Club, Angus moved to Mercantile Rowing Club in Melbourne. In the eights, Angus competed in the Thames Challenge Cup in 2014 and 2015. Angus also rowed with the club at the Australian Rowing Championships, forming part of the winning U23 coxed four race crew in 2015.
Angus attended The Geelong College from 2007-2012. His interest in rowing was formed during his time at The Geelong College. He rowed in the Year 10 boys first eight in stroke seat, reaching the college’s first eight crew the following year.
