ALEXANDER COTO AND JOHN COTO MEMORIAL PRIZE The Alexander Coto and John Coto Memorial Prize is a current award for a student not otherwise named on the Academic Prize List who has worked consistently. It is an annually offered prize in memory of
Alexander James 'Lex' Coto (1909-1942) and
Dr John Halliday Coto (1912-1962) both, former students of the School.
The Alexander Coto Prize was first established in 1942 and first listed in the Pegasus issue of January, 1943 and usually, several were awarded each year.
Pegasus in 1943, described the proposed Alexander Coto Memorial Prizes funded by Mrs Ethel Coto as
‘to be given to boys who have worked hard to overcome difficulties, but are not prize winners’ .
Mrs Ethel Louisa nee Jackson was the wife of Dr Daniel Samuel Coto (1874-1936). Their sons, Ralph Jackson Coto (1908-1993); Alexander James Coto (1909-1942); and John Halliday Coto (1912-1962) were all boarders at the College during the 1920s. All three sons of Mrs Ethel Coto served in the RAAF during World War II. Alexander James Coto known as 'Alex' and 'Lex' was killed when two bomber aircraft collided at Bairnsdale. The first Alexander Coto Prize was awarded in his memory in 1942.
In 1964, after the death of John Halliday Coto, a second prize in memory of John Coto was added although the prizes were not awarded individually. Since that time, the two memorials have been merged as a single award with multiple awardees.
