Mitchell Anderson (Football 1993).
Mitchell Anderson broke the world 24 hours cycling record at the Australian Automotive Research Centre Track near Anglesea by cycling 275 laps of the 3.25 km circuit and completing 895.04km in total on 31 March 2018.
He also holds the 12 hour record which he set about a year previously in 2017.
Mitchell is the second Geelong Collegian to hold the 24 Hours World Cycling Record, a prodigious endurance feat previously held by another former Geelong Collegian,
Rod Evans.An elite endurance sportsman, Mitchell was awarded a full sporting blue six times while studying at the University of Melbourne and gained a University Sports Association Scholarship in 2002. A professional triathlete for twelve years, he finished 30 Ironmans (winning WA and Japan) including eight starts at the World Ironman Championships at Kona, Hawaii with best placing at 11th and 14th overall.
After finishing both Physiotherapy and Science degrees with Honours at the University of Melbourne he began a doctoral thesis in Physiology and investigated 'natural talent' and the links between genetics and excercise in sports. He transferred to Medicine in 2002, completing an MBBS in 2007, before finishing a diploma of Surgical Anatomy in 2012.
Mitchell was educated as a day student at Geelong College from 3 February 1988 to December 1993. At College he was awarded the
T W Davies Prize as School Vice-Captain and the
James and Dolina Memorial Prize for outstanding service to the College in work, sport and leadership. His academic excellence was acknowledged with the
B R Keith Modern Language Prize.
He was a member of the Athletics Team in 1992 and 1993, Vice-Captain of the Cross Country Team, Stroke of the 3rd Rowing VIII in 1992 and the 2nd Rowing VIII in 1993. His diverse abilities were recognised with School Colours in Cross-Country, Drama, Football and House Colours in Athletics, Basketball, Debating, Hockey, Music and Swimming. He was also McArthur House Co-Captain. A conspicuous all-rounder and musician he played in both the School Concert Band and Symphony Orchestra in 1991 and 1992.
