Frank Gabriel Herman was a boarder at Geelong College from early 1907 to late 1911 although the Enrolment Register includes a note 'Where is original entry? Probably 1903. Was here 9 years to 1911.' He was a conspicuous sportsman at College as a member of the 1st Football XVIII of 1909 and as the Stroke of the 1st Rowing VIII of 1909. He was also a School Prefect in 1909. His address at enrolment was listed as J J Goller & Co, Ballarat.

He was born on 25 August 1894, the son of Frank Herman and Kate Ethel nee Blight.

He served for 3 years with the Australian Mounted Training Corps, 71st Infantry in England for 6 months before he enlisted (No 8049) 27 October 1915, embarked with the 8th Infantry Brigade Train, 18th Company Army Service Corps on HMAT A11 Ascanius on 10 November 1915, for Egypt and France.

He was Mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig’s Despatches, gazetted 28 December 1917, ‘for distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty in the field during the period from 26 February until midnight on 20 September 1917’ . He was promoted to Sergeant. He returned to Australia on HMT Chemnitz, embarking on 7 July 1919.

Frank Herman died on Christmas Day 1975 at Macleod, Victoria.

His brother, Arnold Glover Herman (1897-1977), was alo educated at Geelong College.
