MILES, Stephen John BA MA PhD (1944-2023) Stephen Miles, teacher and priest, has taught in a variety of educational environments and in recent times has worked in hospital chaplaincy. Stephen was born on 3 May 1944 in East Melbourne to Malcolm and Jessie, a brother for Kristin, Margaret and Elizabeth. After attending Essendon State School, Stephen entered Geelong College as a boarder in 1955, was a Mackie House Prefect in 1961, Editor of Icarus 1961 and 1962, a member of the Library Committee and Council 1959 to 1962 and Pegasus Editor in 1962. He became Captain of School in 1962. One of the first students at Monash University, he graduated with a BA in English, History and Politics, in March 1966.

He taught first at Melbourne Grammar School, Wadhurst, and was resident Tutor in Perry House in 1966. At the end of 1966, he went to England and taught for the first half of 1967 at the Canterbury Cathedral Choir School. During the academic year 1967/1968 he was at Worcester College Oxford, studying for the Dip Ed and teaching part-time at the Dragon School. After two years as an English teacher at Hampton Grammar School, Middlesex, Stephen went to America to teach at St Paul's School, Concord, New Hampshire and later Georgetown Day School, Washington DC. He then returned to the UK and in 1974, he graduated with an MA in American Literature from University College, London. He continued post graduate studies in English at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he also taught English, and was granted a PhD from the University of California in 1980. After three years as a Lecturer in English at UCLA, he returned to Australia in 1983 to study Theology at the Melbourne College of Divinity.
In 1987, he was ordained deacon and priest by the Archbishop of Melbourne. He served two curacies - at St John' s, East Malvern, and St Andrew' s, Clifton Hill with St Luke' s, North Fitzroy, and was Assistant Ecumenical Chaplain at Melbourne University. In 1989 he was appointed Anglican Chaplain and Chaplain Co-ordinator at the new Monash Medical Centre, Clayton. After eight years in hospital chaplaincy Stephen went to work in the Church of England Diocese in Europe, as Chaplain of All Saints, Cologne with St Boniface, Bonn. He returned to Australia in 2003 and before his retirement in 2011, was an Associate Priest at Christ Church, South Yarra and Anglican Chaplain to Cabrini Palliative Care Hospital, Prahran.
Since 1975, he has shared his life and interests with American artist, John Miller (See McCullough' s Encyclopaedia of Australian Art, 2006).
In retirement, Stephen continued his research, writing a family history. He continued active ministry in parishes and as Chaplain at Monash University until he was 76 years of age.
Stephen donated a large collection of photographs and other heritage documents to the College in 2010. Included within this Collection were excellent images of students and in-class images of staff. Several of these were used in the College's 2011 sesquicentenary history
'The Way to the Stars' .
Stephen passed away 23 March 2023, aged 79 years.
