YOUNG, Robert James (1877-1939)


Robert Young was enrolled as a boarder at Geelong College in 1893. The enrolment register does not provide an exact date of enrolment nor his date of departure.

Robert, born at Horsham on 17 August 1877, was one of three children of parents, Thomas Young and his wife, Catherine nee Jenkins to attend Geelong College. He had previously attended Ballarat College though this was not noted on his Geelong College enrolment record. Thomas and Catherine Young had eight children that survived childhood and one of their daughters, Amy Young married Percy Gore Brett (1879-1968) who was also educated at Geelong College. Thomas Young (1850-1935) originally from Yetholm, Roxburghshire, Scotland was a former Horsham Borough Councillor and Mayor of Horsham in 1884.

A biographical enntry in Early Pioneer Families of Victoria and Riverina included material about the Young Family and Robert Young:
'born Horsham, Vic 17th Aug 1877. Educated Ballarat College and Geelong College. Joined staff at Horsham branch Commercial Bank of Australia. After two and a half years he resigned and entered Young Brothers' office, Horsham and held the position of auctioneer for 35 years. Now travelling representative for Younghusband Limited wool agents, Melbourne. Married Mabel May Stout, amember of a pioneer family of Stawell, and had issue:- 1. Kathleen Estelle. 2. Eleanor Isobel died 27th Jan 1930. 3. Marjorie Alison. 4. Enid Clare.'

Robert Young later became a stock and station agent. Robert died at Warrnambool, age 61 years, on 3 February 1939. His brothers, John Wilkie Young (1889-1980) and Frank Stuart Young (1892-1959) also attended Geelong College. Thomas
