WORLD WAR I (1914-1918)

WORLD WAR I (1914-1918)

During World War I, a total of at least 534 former Collegians and 10 staff members have been confirmed as serving during World War I (508 OGC - Affleck). Of these, 97 are known to have died directly as a result of their military experience. The College World War I Memorial Tablet lists a total of 529 'Old Collegians' with service of which 87 are listed as having died. The two sets of data have yet to be completely reconciled.

There are 97 Old Collegians listed as dying on service on this page. Frederick Steele (1885-1914) was the first to be killed on 29 October 1914 at the First Battle of Ypres.
Albert Edward Hayward (1867-1932) is erroneously listed on the World War I Memorial Tablet as dying during the war.
